From ‘Bama to Hotlanta — The Bandit Run Finishes

Posted by David Kinney

Day Three took us from Birmingham to Atlanta, with a stop for a museum tour and lunch at Talladega.
Joe, AJ and myself drove the less than two hundred miles without incident. My black 1979 Trans Am did not skip a beat for the final two days, so lets just call the first day’s problems bad luck, or, more likely, shakedown problems due to more use than the car has had in a number of years.
I had made the call to leave the car at the Atlanta airport and have the car put on a transport home. More running out of time than anything else, the extra day in the office is going to give me some time to catch up on work before my trip to — fans of the movie will guess it — Boston on Saturday.
Lessons learned?
Quite a few actually. People who have just been introduced to each other can share a sense of community and belonging after a short talk or a shared mission. We still have wonderful, drivable and great “Blue highways” that run between the interstates and offer a more relaxed view of our country.
Lessons reinforced? That people all over are sharing, fun and like to have a good time.
And the best lesson reinforced is that car people, if they drive million dollar Ferrari’s or $2,000 Pontiac Catalinas (you know who you are)! are the best folks in the world. Period.
